I designed and built Chord Charter as its sole developer, working through AI-assisted development with Claude Code. The app came out of my father-in-law's need as a musician, which shaped every decision in it — the drag-and-drop placement model, the two-column stage view, offline-first storage, and a set list flow built around what actually happens between songs at a gig rather than what's easiest to implement. My role is product direction, interaction design and review: I define how a feature should behave, iterate on it until it feels right in the hand, and hold the line on scope so the app stays a fast tool for one job rather than a general-purpose music editor. I own the release pipeline and the roadmap, and every decision about what the app does and doesn't do.
DESCRIPTION
Chord Charter is a mobile app for building and performing from chord charts, written in React Native and Expo with TypeScript and shipped to Android. You paste or import a set of lyrics, then drag chords from a palette and drop them directly onto the words where they're played — each chord becomes a resizable, colour-coded block anchored to its position in the line. Section markers like [Chorus] are parsed automatically and rendered as styled headings, so a plain block of lyrics becomes a readable chart without any manual formatting.
Beyond the editor, it includes a browsable chord library with rendered fretboard diagrams and a custom chord editor, transpose and capo support for shifting a song into a singable key, and a full-screen preview with a one- or two-column layout toggle for reading on stage. Songs and set lists are stored locally so everything works offline, with a set list builder and a navigator for moving between songs mid-performance. Lyrics can be imported by pasting or pulled straight from a URL, and finished charts export to PDF for printing or sharing.
